On Mantar's 2022 album “Pain Is Forever And This Is The End”, the German duo brought a sonic richness to their insanely heavy blackened-death-punk grooves, helping the record reach #2 on the official German Top 10 album chart.
The record added softer, calmer and more harmonic textures to Mantar's expanded sonic palette, but on 2024's 'Post Apocalyptic Depression', Mantar shatter the palette and punch a hole in the canvas. “We wanted to do EVERYTHING different from the last album,” Hanno affirms. “The last album was very produced. A huge sounding record, clean production. A demonstration of power. That's what we wanted and felt back then. Now we're trying to destroy what we built with the last album. There's a certain beauty in disappointing people's expectations.”
The ethos is clear from the first two words Hanno uses to describe the recording process: “Quick and dirty. We didn't even bring our own equipment into the studio, we just used what we found there. There was no planning whatsoever in the making of this album. We wanted to keep it as primitive as possible. We were braver this time and literally cut any shit out of the songs that we didn't think was necessary. I think you can hear that it's more fun to play these new songs. I feel very connected to my punk roots on this album. A very punk rock production and definitely the rawest sounding next to our first album.' To reconnect Mantar with the spirit of their 2014 debut Death By Burning, the new front cover was once again painted by renowned artist Aron Wiesenfeld, whose haunting aesthetic gives the band such a distinctive and striking visual impact. It feels like a band coming full circle and bringing Mantar's first ten years to a close.
