die anderen - ‘Berlin Radio’ and ‘Global minded’ - Their two self-produced tapes (1987/88) as sound samples of a rebellious generation now on two LPs (each including a 20-page vinyl booklet, two band stickers) ‘die anderen’ played a decisive role in shaping East Berlin's subculture with their raw, energetic sound. The band was formed on New Year's Eve 1985 in a squatted rehearsal room in Friedrichshain around the charismatic singer and lyricist Olaf ‘Toster’ Tost. 40 years later, we are releasing both privately produced tapes to honour an anniversary. From the mid-1980s, the band captured the attitude to life and the challenges of a generation that was looking for its own way between state repression and youthful rebellion. They provided a platform to articulate their own views and aspirations. Their unmistakable, catchy mix of punk, ska and new wave as well as lyrics full of subversive energy still captivate audiences today. Their legendary song ‘(Freitagabend in) Berlin’ paints an unembellished picture of life in divided Berlin. It is not only this song that remains a timeless, unembellished testimony to a wild era. The band's live performances often turned into ecstatic events that threatened to drown Berlin's clubs in dance and sweat. With their uncompromising stance against state censorship and their determination to maintain artistic freedom, the band became a spokesperson for the music scene.
