As a singer, poet, songwriter, visual artist, film producer, activist and composer, Serj Tankian, lead singer and lyricist of GRAMMY© Award-winning rock band System of a Down, is always creative and always looking forward. In 2024, this has brought him to a place where he is also digging up his past and re-evaluating and processing it in the present.
In his recent memoir, the New York Times bestseller “Down with the System”, he dove deep into the principles, passions and philosophies that have shaped his life inside and outside of music. His new EP, “Foundations”, also draws on music and lyrics from earlier decades and processes them into a hard-hitting, intensely focused collection. “It is,” says Tankian, ”a retrospective of songs from different eras of my life to complement my memoirs.”
Like all of Tankian's works, the five tracks on “Foundations” encompass a broad spectrum of sounds and styles. It is music that traverses several eras and a wide range of emotions. It is also a rock album - “music of rebellion”, as Tankian puts it.
A true creative masterpiece. Tankian recorded “Foundations” primarily at his own Serjical Strike Studios in L.A. He wrote, performed, orchestrated and produced all the material and also contributed the original work entitled “Sunburst”, which graces the album cover.
Other instruments on the album are provided by Dan Monti (guitars, bass and drum programming) and, on “Cartoon Buyer”, by bassist Mario Pagliarulo and SOAD drummer John Dolmayan.
The Music On Vinyl Edition contains exclusively the instrumentals of the 5 tracks on side B. It is limited to 1250 individually numbered copies on Voodoo Vinyl and includes an insert.
