Description

Johnny Cash (* February 26, 1932) is a legend of music history. His death on September 12, 2003 was a shock to many fans, although it came as little surprise. His unrestrained drug addiction and his excessive lifestyle in the fifties and sixties, which only came to an end with his liaison with June Carter, were well known. Yet Cash was first and foremost the greatest and most influential U.S. country singer, and a gifted songwriter to boot. Cash's trademark, in addition to his distinctive bass-baritone voice and his critical and unconventional lyrics, was the "boom-chicka-boom" sound of his backing band, the Tennessee Three, reminiscent of a rolling train. Cash's musical spectrum ranged from country, gospel, rockabilly, blues, folk and pop to the alternative country congenially staged by Rick Rubin from the mid-nineties. His concerts in Folsom and San Quentin prisons at the end of the sixties are legendary. Cash wrote about 500 songs, recorded about 2500 titles, sold more than 50 million records and was awarded 13 Grammy Awards. In addition, Cash appeared in several films and television series as an actor.
