Description

Skinheads wear shaved skulls, heavy boots and bomber jackets. Goths wear deathly pale make-up and dress in bizarre black. Rockabillies show their penchant for the 50s with Elvis quiffs, tattoos and "half-strong" poses. Why do they do it? In many youth subcultures, violence and (self-)destructiveness become a stylistic element of self-presentation. The author examines the style and habitus of young people in subcultures and brings them out of the shadows of media cliché images. In detailed portraits, the members of the scene interviewed talk about their lives, their political attitudes, gender roles, death and violence. El-Nawab does not want to glorify, she does not demonise or trivialise, but takes a close look. This book describes, documents photographically and analyses in a condensed manner in order to gain an exemplary understanding from the internal perspective of the young people.
