Avenged Sevenfold (abbreviated A7X) is the American heavy metalcore band from Huntington Beach, California, formed in 1999. The band's current lineup consists of vocalist M. Shadows, rhythm guitarist Zacky Vengeance, lead guitarist Synyster Gates, bassist Johnny Christ and drummer Brooks Wackerman. Avenged Sevenfold are known for their diverse rock sound and sometimes for their dramatic images on album covers and merchandise. The band emerged with a metalcore sound on their debut album Sounding the Seventh Trumpet and largely continued this sound until their second album Waking the Fallen. The band's style had evolved into a more traditional heavy metal style by the time of their third album and first major label release, City of Evil. With their self-titled fourth album, the band explored new sounds and enjoyed continued mainstream success before the death of founding drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan in 2009. Despite his death, Avenged Sevenfold continued with the help of Dream Theater member Mike Portnoy and released their fifth album Nightmare in 2010, which debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 and was their first #1 album.
