Viagra Boys - Welfare Jazz
Description
Stockholm's post-punk heroes V**gra Boys (with ** to avoid spam filters) finally with their new album. The album was produced by Matt Sweeney (Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Run the Jewels), Justin & Jeremiah Raisen (Yves Tumor, Kim Gordon, Sky Ferreira), and Pelle Gunnerfeldt and Daniel Fagerström (The Hives, The Knife), with whom they have collaborated in the past. V**gra Boys are known for their satirical side and once again we can expect cutting post-punk, a heartfelt rejection for common genre traits and passionate anger at society for the increasing normalization of toxic masculinity, racism, misogyny, class discrimination and egocentrism. Even the album title has a satirical element, as the transliteration of the term for the financial support program for jazz musicians from Swedish strikes at the heart of institutionalized class discrimination and prioritization.
"I'm not very good at talking about politics, but somehow everything is political today," says singer Sebastian Murphy. "I write about rejection or defeat because then I'm honest and authentic." Mixing the small with the big on the new album, Murphy goes on to explain, "When we wrote these songs, I had just gotten out of a long relationship, was doing drugs every day and acting like an asshole. When I realized how obnoxious I was, it was too late. One of the things the album is about is that I had to accept that I was setting myself completely the wrong goals."
