Behind Mahler/Fondermann are Stephan Mahler and Ritchy Fondermann, two musicians with strong roots in the Hamburg music scene.

Stephan Mahler was not only a drummer, but also the songwriter for the punk bands Slime (see the classic ‘Schweineherbst’ from 1994), Screamer and Torpedo Moskau. He played alongside the legendary Jens Rachut in Angeschissen, Kommando Sonne-nmilch and Oma Hans.

Not only did he make his mark with his gothic band (long before the term existed) Mask For, which anticipated the now very popular ‘dark wave’ genre, but he also compensated for his affinity with Swans & Einstürzende Neubauten through his industrial project Faith-Healer. In the late 80s, Arm came along with their frisky punk core, and George & Martha, with him this time as the singer of this atonal rock band, who had the honour of being invited by John Peel to the BBC studios for a session.

Stephan Mahler is undoubtedly a central figure in the Hamburg punk and underground scene from the late 1970s to the present day, most recently with his post-punk band Belgrad.

Ritchy Fondermann, music producer and owner of Hamburg's K-Klangstudio, has produced not only the last two Rocko Schamoni albums, but also the latest ‘Bärchen und die Milchbubies’ and the current album by the band Cryssis featuring ‘Die Toten Hosen’ drummer Vom Ritchie. He is also known far beyond the borders of Germany with his former bands Highschool Nightmare and, above all, Antikörper, and has also published two novels as an author.

The collaboration between Mahler and Fondermann came about through their joint production on the second Belgrad production ‘Lysis’. They realised how well they harmonised and began to implement musical ideas together in 2024. ‘Neu, gebraucht, geliehen & verraucht’ (New, Used, Borrowed & Smoked), the title of the resulting LP, can be understood as quite programmatic: new songs were written, previously unreleased compositions were realised, and new interpretations of already known titles (such as ‘Trauertränen’ by Torpedo Moskau) were created.

Musically clearly connected to their shared punk roots, yet open to diving into acoustic, sometimes even atmospheric realms.

With lyrics in clear poetic language singing about love, life, freedom and death, the result is a colourful, yet very dense album, varied and yet cohesive.
