I?ve heard previous albums by Aussie rockers The Go Set and seen them live a couple of times but this album still took me by surprise. I had previously written them off perhaps somewhat prematurely as being bandwagon jumpers following the folk-punk sounds as popularized by the Dropkick Mckenzies and then copied to death. The folky element is still there, but it sounds very natural and fits in with the style of the band as opposed to other bands that stick a random bagpipe on top of a good punk tune in an attempt to sound rootsy. In fact the rustic sounds take a back seat throughout the early part of the album and the band concentrate on writing some mid paced anthemic punk rock tunes ? think Anti-Flag, The Briggs or even fellow countrymen The Living End. One of their main assets is the powerful organ of vocalist Justin Keenan ? his voice oozes confidence and he can really carry a tune. Following the punk hymns at the beginning of the album the band start to flex their musical wings with a couple of Clash-inspired reggae rockers, and come to the end the band bring the tempo right down with some acoustic tunes bringing out the Billy Bragg in them. These are all big names to be compared with which is a compliment in itself. The album has a crystal clear production, almost to the point where it works against them ? it puts a polish on all the corners where a bit more grit might have added an authentic touch of a great band sweating their craft to a well oiled rabble in the corner of a local pub ? but it?s a minor detail. All in all this is a really good album to listen to full of cracking Summer tunes to raise your glass to ? cheers! (powered by www.
