Description

What do you do when you wrote perhaps the best German metal album with "The White Goddess"? Very simple: take a six-year run-up and write an even better record. "The Course Of Empire" will cause a sensation in the scene, even if you have to adjust to a few changes first. The production brings an increased basic hardness to the sound, but also more depth than the white goddess had, and the songs have all become even more varied and complex.

You can recognize Atlantean Codex after a few seconds of the intro "The Alpha And The Occident", but the overall sound has been expanded without leaving the self-imposed limits of Epic Metal. The choirs, which are immensely important for the overall sound, have become even more powerful without appearing overloaded - listen to them for example on "The People Of The Moon" or the incredible "Chariots". In general "Chariots": the band has never before succeeded in transferring the powerful spirit of the old Manowar into modern times in order to combine it with something completely independent. The bitter-sweet "He Who Walks Behind The Years" and the larger-than-life title track also show a mature band that used the long break perfectly to write pieces that will serve as a blueprint for a whole genre for years to come.

The band meanwhile attaches even more importance to catchy choruses and a lot of (guitar) melodies that certainly work very well live. And finally: Singer Markus Becker has improved again and is now an integral part of the Atlantean Codex. Now that the fire has gone out at the closing "The World of Yesterday" and you have an hour of epic metal behind you, there is no doubt: "The Course Of Empire" has become an overpowering album, which rams the entire metallic competition into the ground . So are Atlantean Codex now grown up? By God, no. Are Atlantean Codex still by far the most important and best German metal band of the past 20 years? Damn it, yes! "
