Die Endzeitstimmung um 1980 gab Punk und New Wave erst den nötigen Schub. Sie sorgte für einen unglaublichen Ausbruch von Aktivität und Kreativität. Vorm Hintergrund des atomaren Wettrüstens glaubte niemand mehr an eine große Zukunft deshalb war plötzlich alles erlaubt, ohne Rücksicht auf Verluste. Davon erzählt dieses Buch. Frank Apunkt Schneider entfaltet die Geschichte der Neuen Deutschen Welle und des deutschen Punk-Underground bis hinein in Regional-, Kassetten- und Fanzine-Szenen. Neben den mittlerweile kanonisierten Klassikern dieser Bewegung, (z. B. DAF, Fehlfarben) rückt er sowohl Chartbreaker wie Trio oder Extrabreit als auch Underground-Acts wie Kosmonautentraum, Familie Hesselbach etc. in den Fokus. Schneider zeigt historisch bedingte Schnittmengen auf, erzählt von Freund- wie Feindschaften, stellt Epizentren in der Provinz gegen die Metropolen und knüpft immer ans Hier und Heute an. Die »richtige« Antwort lautete Pur. Ein Allgemeinbildungsfall zu 4.000 Euro. Bloß gehörten auch die Optionen Spliff, Nena und UKW nicht wirklich zur NDW im Sinne einer deutschen New-Wave-Bewegung. Alle drei haben Punk- und New-Wave-Impulse verarbeitet, das aber in der Weise der Popmusik ihrer Zeit, in der New Wave nur einen von vielen Einflüssen darstellte. Natürlich hätte auch ich die »richtige« Antwort gegeben im Sinne derjenigen, die sich diese Warm-up-Frage mit ihrem »Das war die Neue Deutsche Welle«-Fünf-CD-Schuber auf dem Schoß ausgedacht haben. Und nicht meine privat »richtige«. Ich wusste ja, was gemeint war. Dass der Begriff »NDW« unscharf und umstritten ist, darf nicht verwundern, denn Begriffe sind das insbesondere als Genrebezeichnungen. Die Geisteswissenschaften haben mehrere Jahrzehnte damit vergeudet, sich über Definitionen in den Haaren zu liegen und entsprechende Ausschlussverfahren zu eröffnen. Als NDW-Klammer erscheinen mir enge, formalistische, sozusagen »stilkritische« Kriterien nicht geeignet. Erstens kommen so wieder nur die Ersten, Schnellsten und Besten (plus/minus die Untergrundobskursten) in den Blick, die vielleicht mustergültig, deswegen aber noch lange nicht repräsentativ waren. Zweitens werden sich keine Kriterien finden lassen, auf die sich alle mit allen einigen können, und damit geht das Geschrei erst recht los. Drittens sind trennscharfe Kriterien eine bildungsbürgerliche Coffeetable-Idee. Viertens wird sogar das regional einklammernde »deutsch« von Leuten unterlaufen, die Kajagoogoo und »Vamos a la Playa« bei eBay in der Kategorie »NDW« einstellen. Interessante Perspektive! -

In keiner Metropole der Welt hat sich der musikalische Underground so facettenreich entwickelt wie in New York. Kenntnissreich und mit vielen O-Tönen zeichnet Evans die Entwicklung von den in U-Bahn-Stationen auftretenden Doo-Wop-Gruppen der frühen Fünfziger über Bob Dylan und Velvet Underground, Punk und No Wave bis zu den tonangebenden Bands dieser Tage wie den Strokes nach. In dieser Geschichte geht es um Straßenmusiker wie Moondog und David Peel, die skandalös-zotigen The Fugs, John Lennons gemeinsame Freak-Outs mit Yoko Ono, das Aufkommen des Punk mit Richard Hell, den Ramones und den New York Dolls, um die No-Wave-Szene und deren Fortsetzung in der Downtown-Avantgarde rund um John Zorn. Ein großes Kapitel ist der Gegenwart gewidmet, dem bunten Treiben rund um Bands wie Interpol, The Moldy Peaches, The Strokes, Black Dice und Radio 4. Evans' Fazit lautet: Wer als Musiker in New York bestehen will, muss sich den Erfolg in kleinen Clubs und oft sogar auf der Straße erspielen. Das ist ein Grund dafür, dass sich N.Y.C.-Rock selten für große Stadien eignet. Dieser Musik haftet der Geruch enger Kellerräume an, eine intime Stimmung, die das Buch auch stilistisch umzusetzen versteht. Ein großer Serviceteil listet die Adressen der wichtigsten Clubs, Plattenläden etc. auf und gibt Empfehlungen. Das erste deutschsprachige Buch über die Pioniere der Punk-Bewegung Die britischen Crass waren eine der wichtigsten und einflussreichsten Bands der europäischen Punk- und Hardcore-Bewegung. Ihre vom Geist des Anarchismus geprägten Texte und ihr Kampf gegen musikalischen Mainstream, Sexismus, Tierversuche sowie die reaktionäre Politik der 1980er-Jahre trugen maßgeblich zur Politisierung der Szene bei. Auch das collagenhafte Schwarzweiß-Layout ihrer Schallplatten war für die gesamte Bewegung stilbildend. Crass-Schlagzeuger Penny Rimbaud gibt in seiner spannenden Autobiographie Einblick in den vom Ideal der absoluten Selbstverwaltung geprägten Alltag dieser Ausnahmeband und in die bewegten Entstehungsjahre von Punk in Großbritannien. Wenn man den Medien einmal ausnahmsweise Glauben schenken will, dann ist Wenzel Storch nicht nur ein »genialer Quartalsirrer« (Hamburger Abendblatt), sondern auch Deutschlands »seltsamster« (Der Spiegel), »tollkühnster« (Rolling Stone), »wagemutigster« (Szene Hamburg), »exzentrischster« (Geo), »extremster« (Sarah Kuttner) und »besessenster« (Die Welt) Filmemacher. Und natürlich »der beste Regisseur der Welt« (Titanic). Der Fotoband versammelt Bilder von Anne Ullrich, die mehr als zehn Jahre auf Punk- und Hardcore-Konzerten für die einschlägigen Musikmagazine fotografiert hat. Ihre Bilder dokumentieren die bewegte Geschichte der Pogo- und Stagedive-Kultur in lebendigen Schwarzweiß-Fotos von Musikern und Publikum. Die hier versammelte Spanne Bilder von Bands wie Fugazi, Nomeansno, Henry Rollins Band, Bad Religion u. a. zeigt eine vor Energie berstende Szene in engen, stickigen Konzerträumen und dokumentiert so die vitale Jugendkultur, lange bevor viele der Bands zu großen Stars wurden. Lee Hollis, selbst Punk-Musiker der ersten Stunde, kommentierte die Fotos liebevoll, bissig und meist aus eigener Erfahrung. Die Presse: »Der ganze Konzertraum sollte zur Bühne gemacht werden. Touch & Go - the complete hardcore punk zine 79-83-Touch and Go fanzine was the brainchild of Tesco Vee and Dave Stimson and was launched in Lansing, Michigan, in 1979. Major fanatics of the new punk happenings in the late 70s, TV and DS set out to chronicle, lambaste, ridicule, and heap praise on all they arbitrarily loved or hated in the music communities in the US and abroad. In laughably minuscule press runs by todays standards, T & G was made by guys within the Midwest scene strictly for the edification of scenesters and pals in other cities like DC, Philly, Boston, LA, SF, Chicago, et al. Inspired by magazines such as Slash and Search and Destroy and writers like Claude Bessy and Chris Desjardines, TV and DS pumped out seventeen naughty, irreverent issues together, and TV did another five solo. Magazines like Forced Exposure and Your Flesh, among others, soon fired up Xerox machines themselves, and the rest is history. So is the legendary independent record label launched from this zine, and so are the bands covered inside: Black Flag, Minor Threat, the Misfits, Negative Approach, the Fix, the Avengers, the Necros, Discharge, Iron Cross, Youth Brigade, Faith, Die Kreuzen, Crucifix, Poison Idea and all the other punks worth their weight in glorious black and white.
